Overview
The all-new BMW X5 scores high if you’re looking for a luxury SUV to juggle your 9 to 5 lifestyle. The 2008 model is a carryover from 2007. In 2007, the X5 saw a 4.5 inches longer wheelbase, a 7.4 inches increase in overall length, a 2.4 inches increase in width, and a 2 inches increase in height. It is offered in two models, the six-cylinder 3.0si and the V8 4.8i. Standard seating is for five, but an optional 3rd row expands seating capacity to seven. The BMW Full Maintenance Program covers all factory-recommended maintenance, as determined by the Service Interval Indicator for 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first.
Engine and Performance
The 3.0si has a 260-hp 6-cylinder engine. The 4.8i has a 350-hp 4.8-liter V-8 engine. Both come only with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Massive 14-inch front/12.8-inch rear disc brakes bring BMW's most gutsy SUV to a dead-short stop. Fuel economy works out to an estimated 15/21 mpg (city/highway). The all-independent suspension provides a smooth, quiet ride. All X5 models come with all-wheel-drive and Dynamic Stability Control, which come into play in off-road conditions. Towing capacity is 6,000 pounds on all models.
Build and Styling
The X5 has a muscular frame with smooth contours and rugged good looks. Typical BMW styling accents - the twin kidney-shaped grille, adaptive xenon headlights, and L-shaped taillights straddle 17” large-diameter wheels on the 3.0i. Cabin accommodations offer luxury and comfort and come fully loaded. BMW's iDrive uses a single knob to control entertainment, communication, navigation, and climate functions. Every X5 comes with dynamic anti-lock brakes and stability control, a battery safety terminal, a central locking system, Hill Descent Control, and an extra set of brake light alerts. Passive safety measures include front/side impact airbags, head protection system, and front safety belts with automatic pretensioners and force limiters. The X5 earned a "Good" rating (the highest) in IIHS frontal-offset crash testing for safety.
